Protein Shakes vs Complete Meal Shakes: How to Compare Them
By Floris Wolswijk, CEO of Queal · Sources checked
A protein shake is not automatically a complete meal. Protein shakes mainly offer a convenient way to add protein; complete meal shakes are formulated to provide a broader mix of nutrients for a meal. For breakfast or lunch, compare the actual portion’s energy, carbohydrates, fats, fibre, vitamins and minerals, as well as protein.
We make Queal Steady as a complete meal shake. This guide explains how to compare the labels so you can choose something that fits your breakfast or lunch.
What are you asking the shake to replace?
If you already have breakfast sorted and want an easy source of protein alongside it, a protein shake may suit that purpose. It does not follow that the same shake, mixed with water, covers everything you wanted from breakfast.
Voedingscentrum, the Netherlands’ nutrition information centre, explains that protein shakes can be practical, but are not necessary for everyone who exercises. A varied diet can usually provide the protein people need. Read Voedingscentrum’s explanation.
If your aim is a convenient lunch between meetings, look beyond protein. How much food does the prepared portion provide, and what else is in it?
| What to compare | Protein-focused shake | Complete meal shake |
|---|---|---|
| Intended role | Convenient additional protein | A broader nutrient mix intended for a meal |
| Energy per portion | Check the label; protein grams alone do not tell you | Check the portion size and its energy |
| Carbohydrates and fats | Amounts vary by recipe | Included as part of the meal formulation |
| Fibre | Check whether an amount is declared | Check the declared amount rather than assuming |
| Vitamins and minerals | Fortification varies | Look for the actual nutrient table and amounts |
| Preparation | Water, milk or another drink can change the result | Follow the specified preparation method |
These are starting points, not guarantees about every product. A protein shake can contain added vitamins; a complete meal shake can also be high in protein. Neither description guarantees suitability for every person.
Read the portion before comparing the numbers
EU nutrition declarations generally give values per 100g or 100ml, with portion information sometimes added. The per-100g column helps compare powders; the portion column helps you understand what you will actually consume. Fibre, vitamins and minerals are additional declarations rather than part of the mandatory core nutrition table. European Commission guidance.
For powders, check whether the figures describe dry powder or the prepared drink. Adding water changes the drink’s volume without adding nutrients. Adding milk or a plant drink changes its nutritional content, so include that when comparing your breakfast options.
Also check grams rather than relying on one scoop. Scoops and suggested servings differ between products.
A practical example using Queal Steady

Steady’s ingredients include oats, soy flour, plant proteins, carbohydrate ingredients, oils, and added vitamins and minerals. See our ingredients.
Use the nutrition table for your exact flavour and recipe. Write down its per-100g values, then multiply each value by the grams of powder you plan to use and divide by 100. For example, a 150g portion contains 1.5 times each per-100g amount. Include anything you add to the shake.
Both smaller and larger portions use the same recipe but provide different quantities of food. A protein claim therefore needs its portion context. These calculations help read a label; they are not recommendations for how much you should eat. See the Steady recipe information.
Steady contains gluten and soy. May contain milk. Check the exact pack’s label and contact us before ordering if you cannot establish suitability for your needs.
Convenience comes with tradeoffs
For a busy morning, powder and water can be convenient. But you still need a shaker, somewhere to wash it and a flavour and texture you enjoy. A shake also gives a different eating experience from toast, porridge or a packed lunch.
If you prefer chewing your lunch or eating with colleagues, a conventional meal may fit your routine better. If you already eat a breakfast you enjoy, there may be no practical reason to replace it.
Keep variety in the wider diet too. Voedingscentrum’s Schijf van Vijf guidance includes vegetables, fruit, wholegrains, and varied protein sources. A nutrient table is useful, but does not describe every aspect of eating well. Explore the Schijf van Vijf.
Does meal replacement mean a weight-loss product?
The wording can be confusing. Here, we are comparing shakes for everyday meals. EU-authorised health claims for meal replacements for weight control have specific composition and use conditions; a product marketed as a complete meal should not automatically be assumed to meet them. EU conditions for those claims.
For your next breakfast or lunch, choose by purpose, portion and the full label. Check the exact flavour’s ingredients and allergen information too. For a broader buying checklist, see how to choose a meal replacement shake.
